Also, for valuable tips to help you stay on track with college planning and financial aid issues, you can sign up to receive a weekly newsletter from Iowa College Access Network (ICAN). (Go to www.icansucceed.org, and click on “Get E-News”.) This website has information for parents and students from Middle School through College level. The College Board website (www.collegeboard.com) also has a great deal of helpful information.
Every senior who is applying for financial aid in college, including federal and state student grants, work-study, and loans, should submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon after January 1st, 2012, as possible. Visit http://www.pin.ed.gov to obtain a pin number used for the application and then visit http://www.fafsa.gov to complete and submit your financial aid application online. Check with individual colleges for deadline dates.
Twelfth grade students will soon begin the process of applying to colleges and universities; guidelines will be presented in class along with an informational packet.

The Questbridge 2011 National College Match program helps high-achieving low-income students gain admission and full four-year scholarships to some of the nation's best colleges. The deadline for application is September 30, 2011. If you would like to learn more about Questbridge or apply, please refer to the website www.questbridge.org for more information.
As part of the college admissions process, all New Indian School juniors will be taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) at school during the morning of Wednesday, October 12. This exam serves as a practice for the SAT I measuring critical reading, math problem solving, and writing skills; it is also the first step to enter college scholarship competitions conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. More information will be presented to students in class and sent home soon.
In preparation for the PSAT, John Armstrong is offering an optional class for students wishing to gain more knowledge and practice before taking the test:

The PLAN exam will be administered to all sophomores at school during the morning of Wednesday, October 12, 2011. PLAN is a “pre-ACT” assessment measuring verbal, mathematical, and scientific reasoning abilities. More information will be presented in class and sent home.
