In kindergarten, students explore relationships with those nearest to them—their family and friends. The social atmosphere of school life gains more emphasis in the primary (1st/2nd) grades and branches out to include the town and local occupations. A vision of the whole country is introduced in the intermediate (3rd/4th) grades, with a more in-depth study of the United States and its regions. Iowa History is the focus of the first year in the upper elementary grades (5th/6th), ending with a thorough study of American history.
