Tennis Team Finishes 2nd at Warrior Challenge

The New Indian School boy's tennis team overcame the elements on Saturday to finish 2nd at the Warrior Challenge played at Veteran's Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids. With winds gusting to 30mph, caps were swept off the players' heads and routine shots required total focus. The Pioneers, led by Sam Stickels, finished a strong second against a field that included some of the largest high schools in the state.

Stickels' gritty mentality prevailed as he won the #1 singles flight, narrowly defeating Cedar Rapids Washington's top player, Jackson Hoyt, in a come from behind win. Maharishi's #2 doubles team, Girindra Selleck and Chandre Morales, dominated their flight to capture the other first place medal for the Pioneers. The Pioneers #1 doubles duo, Surya Sahwney and Solaris Nite finished second behind CR Washington. In the #2 singles flight, Dave Fleshman captured 3rd place, winning his final match after being a point away from losing.

Team Totals were:

Cedar Rapids Washington: 129
New Indian School: 113
Decora: 78
Cedar Rapids Jefferson: 74
Davenport Central: 44
