Speech Showcase March 4-6, 11-12

Enjoy an entertaining night of fantastic performances the weekends of March 4-6 and 11-12 at Spayde Theater on MUM campus. Performances begin at 7:30 March 4, 5, 11, and 12. A 2:00 matinee is scheduled for March 6. General admission is $10, $8 for students. Reserved seating is available for $15 by calling 512-632-8823.

Four out of nine Maharishi School teams received an outstanding ranking and were selected to perform at the Iowa High School Speech Festival in Ames.

The Sorcerer's Shoes is a solo mime performed by Sky Nite. Sky is a world hip hop dance bronze medalist and The Sorcerer’s Shoes showcases his dance skills and spectacular physical talent.

Spamalot, (above) a selection from the Monty Python musical is performed by Derek Thatcher, Sky Nite, Brenton Schwartz, Paul DeAngelis, James Francis, Toby James. Coach Brendan Thomas says, “This show is hysterical to watch. The performers have incredible energy and enthusiasm.”

The Real Inspector Hound, (above) a farce of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, written by modern English playwright Tom Stoppard. It is performed by Ryan Stakland, Holden Ketterhagen, Derek Thatcher, Brenton Schwartz, Jonina Thorsteinsdottir, Essa Johnson, Raphael Gelfand, Chosie Titus, and assistant directed by Anna Brett. “This is an extremely talented cast,” said coach Brendan Thomas, “Out of 200 teams, only 8 were selected perform at the Festival.”

The girls’ improvisation team performers are Hifza Akber, Jessica Orne, Avery Travis, and Sophia Medvedeva. Coached by Matt Speers, these ninth grade girls are very funny and full of surprises. Out of 700 predominantly senior boys’ teams, Team Travis is among only 25 selected to perform at the Festival.

Also performing are 5 additional Maharishi School teams who received top ranking at the district level.

The Festival is a celebration and students have the opportunity to entertain and be entertained by Iowa’s best high school performers.

According to their website, the Iowa High School Speech Association is “built upon the belief that no form of activity is any more important than that of learning to speak effectively. All true Americans believe in educational enlightenment, but the effectiveness of each enlightenment may be lost through the inability of our people to express to others their ideas and beliefs.”
