“Sparks Fly” As Maharishi School Tops Ottumwa

By Carson Tigges, Ledger sports editor | May 03, 2011

Nearly four hours were in the books and the sun had just about called it a day, but Maharhishi School picked up a fiercly-contested 7-2 win over Ottumwa Monday evening.

Pioneer head coach Lawrence Eyre called it a “high energy duke out” from start to finish, and Sam Arsanjani and CJ Ray kicked it off at No. 1 singles. Ray, a 2010 state singles semifinalist, toughed out a 6-4, 4-6, (10-7) thrilling super tiebreaker victory over the up and coming Arsanjani in front of a good crowd at Punj Tennis Center.

Ray’s brother, Steven, was the only other Bulldog to notch a victory however, and the rest of the matches fell Maharishi School's way.

Thomas Weiss took a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles while Derek Thatcher eeked out a first-set tiebreaker to win his No. 3 singles match 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Steven Ray used another super tiebreaker to get a win for Ottumwa in a drawn-out match at No. 4 while Solaris Nite and Brenton Schwartz took care of business for the Pioneers at the bottom of the lineup.

Maharishi School then slammed the door in doubles.

Nite and Schwartz clinched the win with a relatively quick win at No. 3 doubles. Weiss and Thatcher took a closer-than-the-final-score-indicates win at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-3 before another marathon match took place at No. 2.

Arsanjani and Ray again went to a super tiebreaker, but Maharishi School came out the victor as the sun was setting.

Maharishi School will travel to Fort Madison for a dual tonight before getting set for the Ottumwa Invite Saturday where Eyre says to “expect more fireworks.”
