Pioneers Tennis Challenge Quality Opponents in Des Moines

From the Fairfield Ledger --The New Indian School of the Age of Enlightenment boys’ tennis team took on some of the best Iowa had to offer Saturday in the Des Moines Valley Tournament in Des Moines.

MSAE played hard against Valley (West Des Moines) High School, which in 2009 had the largest enrollment of any high school in Iowa, but fell by the team score of 6-3.

Giranda Selleck won his single match 7-6, 1-6, 10-8. The Pioneers earned their other two victories in the doubles matches. Selleck and Sam Stickels won by the score of 6-7, 6-1, 10-4. Surya Sawhney and Solaris Nite won their doubles match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

“The guys played great in the doubles against a really tough team,” MSAE coach Steve Briggs said. “All in all, it was a great start to the season.”

The Pioneers were able to beat Marshalltown 11-0 to start the day. Stickels, Sawhney, Nite, Selleck, Avery Mullenneaux, and Chandre Morales all won their individual matches. All six players won in straight sets, the closest score being 6-4.

All four doubles matches were won in straight sets by the Pioneers.

MSAE will play next in the Warrior Invitational Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
