Pioneers Outlast Ottumwa in Monday Tennis Action

OTTUMWA — It took nearly three and a half hours Monday, but the Maharishi School boys’ tennis team was able to post its sixth win of the season.

The Pioneers battled to an 8-1 away win vs. Ottumwa, winning five of six singles matches and sweeping the doubles matches.

According to head coach Lawrence Eyre, the meet was a “high-energy duke-out” from start to finish.

Though MSAE’s Sam Arsanjani dropped the No. 1 singles match to three-time state qualifier CJ Ray, the Pioneers clinched the team win with straight-set victories at Nos. 2-6.

Thomas Weiss won at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4, No. 3 Sam Stickels took a 6-0, 6-3 win and Raphael Gelfand won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. No. 5 Pioneer sophomore Solaris Nite grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 victory, and Surya Sawhney posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

No. 1 doubles was the closest match of the night, with Ottumwa’s CJ Ray and Sam Kramer stretching Weiss and Stickels to the limit. After splitting the first two sets by identical 6-4 scores, the two teams played a match tiebreak. Down 5-8, Weiss and Stickels mounted a thrilling comeback for an 11-9 tiebreak win.

Arsanjani and Gelfand won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Nite and Sawhney took a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Pioneers (6-1) are back in Fairfield today to face Fort Madison.
