Pioneers’ Johnson Makes Mark in Long Jump

By Michael Leach, Ledger sports editor | May 18, 2012--DES MOINES — Maharishi School’s Essa Johnson barely missed out on a medal last season, but the senior wasn’t about the leave Drake empty-handed again.

Johnson, who finished ninth in the Class 1A long jump last season, had a best mark of 16-feet, 7-inches in the same event Thursday to finish sixth. Her jump, just 2.25 inches behind fifth-place Lexi Frieden of Valley Community, gave the Pioneer girls three points in the team standings.
