DeAngelis leads Pioneers with a 39

The New Indian School of the Age of Enlightenment boys’ golf team got to kick off its season Thursday with a match against Central Lee at Walton Golf Club in Fairfield.

The Pioneers won 194-235. MSAE coach Ed Hipp wasn’t expecting a win against the Hawks, who are routinely in the upper half of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference standings at the end of the season. The golfers and the coach alike are pleased that they get to start off the season with a winning record, especially against a team like Central Lee.

“After a cold winter it was great to get out and play in some good golfing weather,” MSAE coach Ed Hipp said. “It was a surprise to see that Central Lee finally succumbed to the normal cycle and brought a team that is rebuilding after losing several seniors from last year.”

Mickey DeAngelis led the Pioneers with a 39 and was a medalist. Nathaniel Zhu registered a 50, which was the second highest score for either team on the day. Central Lee’s top golfer was Garrett Greenfield, who struck a 56 on the day. MSAE’s top four golfers scored a 53 or better.

Hipp was impressed with the sportsmanship of both teams, and with all the laughing going on it was clear to him that both teams were just happy to be outside and playing.

“I was very impressed by the happy, friendly energy of the Central Lee players,” Hipp said.

MSAE (1-0) will play Tuesday at the Albia Invite and will have a dual match against Wapello later this week.
