Pioneers Get Clean Sweep at Home Invite

Maharishi School takes team title by wide margin.

Maharishi School finished on top of all four divisions at the Pioneer Invite Saturday and continued its string of tournament titles in dominating fashion.

Sam Arsanjani scored 53 games and Raphael Gelfand won 52 to become singles champs well ahead of the rest of the pack. David Fleshman was the runnerup at No. 2 singles playing for the Pioneer JV squad with 35 games won. Derek Thatcher and Thomas Weiss kept firing on all cylinders with a win at No. 1 doubles while Brenton Schwartz and Solaris Nite topped the No. 2 doubles field.

The Pioneers tallied up a total of 210 games while Davis County was a distant second in the final team standings with 137. Fairfield, with only two players present, finished sixth.

Arsanjani continues to shine for the Pioneers in singles play and after climbing from the fourth spot on the MSAE ladder a year ago, the junior hopes to stay on track heading down the stretch run of the season.

“It’s been a long road, but it’s been a good road,” Arsanjani said. “I really need to improve on staying focused in each game and to keep moving forward. I have a tendency to get behind and start giving up, but I’ve gotten better at it since last year.”

Thatcher and Weiss also figure to put together strong postseason runs after playing their way to the state doubles tournament a year ago. Thatcher, a senior, and Weiss, a junior, matched Arsanjani’s high-mark of 53 games won Saturday.

“We’ve been playing pretty well — just staying consistent and not trying to do too much,” Thatcher said. “We just have to take it one point at a time. Hopefully we can get back to state, but we’re not overly concerned with objective goals. We just want to play good tennis.”

Maharishi School will be back on the court tonight against a tough Ottumwa team, then turn around and travel to Fort Madison Tuesday.
