OTTUMWA — Add another win to the Maharishi School victory total for 2010.

The Pioneers edged host Ottumwa to take home the team title at the Ottumwa Invite — its second tournament win in as many weeks — Saturday. The Pioneers played in the finals of all four divisions while Ottumwa missed the final two at No. 2 doubles that proved to be the difference in the final team standings. The Pioneers scored 10 points to beat out Ottumwa’s nine while Keokuk came in third with five.

Maharishi School also took a 7-2 dual victory from Ottumwa last week.

Jay Stewart and Raphael Gelfand made sure to keep Ottumwa out of the final with a first-round 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over the Bulldogs’ Sam Wood and Michael Donlin in that No. 2 doubles division. Stewart and Gelfand then beat Oskaloosa’s Justin and Aaron Den Hartog 6-2, 6-2 before settling for second after a 7-5, 7-5 loss to the Keokuk team of Drew Kline and Dan Williams.

Derek Thatcher and Thomas Weiss dominated the field at No. 1 doubles losing only one game out of 37 played on the day. The duo capped their run through the bracket with a 6-0, 6-0 win vs. Ottumwa’s Tyler Granneman and Riley Hanson in the final.

Ottumwa and Maharishi School also played the finals in both singles divisions with the Bulldogs taking the match both times.

Playing No. 1 singles for the Pioneers, Joseph Gelfand beat Oskaloosa’s Alex Knoot 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 and Keokuk’s Nick Smidt 6-0, 6-0 before falling to CJ Ray 6-0, 6-2.

Sam Arsanjani also took second for the Pioneers at No. 2 doubles with a first round bye leading up to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bradley Bish of Davis County. Ottumwa’s Kyle Nicholson took down Arsanjani 6-3, 7-5 in the finals.

The tournament was the conclusion of a highly successful regular season for the Pioneers, who now set their sights on the competing against the entire state of Iowa. Maharishi School will begin its road back to the state tournament beginning with Thursday’s district tournament.
