Pioneer Girls’ Tennis Wins Big in Opener

Like the boys’ team before it, Maharishi School girls’ tennis opened the season with a convincing win over West Burlington/Notre Dame on Tuesday.

The Pioneers posted a 9-0 sweep against the Nikes, altogether surrendering just 12 games while winning 71. MSAE won two varsity matches by sweeps.

“It was great to play our first match of the season and earn a decisive victory,” said girls’ coach Laurie Eyre. “Everyone played well.”

Minna Mohammadi and Katya Sheridan won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles with clean 8-0 sweeps, while No. 3 Pearl Sawhney and No. 4 Sophia Medvedeva were victorious in their respective matches. Dia Huggins won at No. 5 singles by the final score of 8-2, and Flower Shreck took the No. 6 match 8-2, as well.

In doubles action, No. 1 duo Mohammadi and Sheridan eased to an 8-1 win. Sawhney combined with Medvedeva for a 7-4 victory ended by injury at No. 2 doubles, and Huggins and Alina Knight won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Knight and Hifza Akber won their JV singles matches with a pair of 8-0 sweeps, and Shreck and Akber won in JV doubles by an 8-5 final.

The Pioneers’ home opener is today at the Punj Tennis Center courts against Fort Madison.
