Pioneer Girls’ Tennis Tops Burlington

BURLINGTON — The Maharishi School girls’ tennis team will be entering regional play with a spotless record following its season finale 7-2 victory over Burlington Thursday.

The Pioneers improved to 9-0 on the season taking four of six victories in singles play and sweeping all three doubles matches on the Grayhounds’ courts.

“The girls had to play well today against stiffer competition with many of the matches being close,” said Pioneer head coach Laurie Eyre. “However, they did pull out the win on this perfect day for tennis.”

The Pioneers’ Minna Mohammadi kicked off the day with a 10-5 win at No. 1, and No. 2 Katya Sheridan defeated her opponent 10-6. Pearl Sawhney won at the No. 4 spot 10-6, while Alina Knight won 10-6 vs. Burlington’s No. 6.

No. 1 doubles team Mohammadi and Sheridan won 10-5, and the duo of Sophia Medvedeva and Sawhney posted a 10-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Dia Huggins and Knight won the third doubles match 10-6.

In JV doubles action, Maharishi School duo Jacqueline Leete and Flower Shreck defeated Burlington’s Jessica Coulter and Karlie Lawler 6-2.

The Pioneers open up regional play at 9 a.m. Saturday vs. Davis County in Fairfield. The winner will play the winner of a first-round matchup between Fairfield and Mount Pleasant later Saturday.
