Pioneer Girls Remain Undefeated

It was a hot, humid day for tennis Saturday, but Pioneer girls’ tennis kept its cool in a double dual against Albia and Holy Trinity.

The Pioneers won 16 of 18 matches on the day to top both adversaries on the Punj Tennis Center courts in Fairfield. Maharishi School posted a 7-2 win over Holy Trinity and a 9-0 sweep of Albia.

The two team wins kept the Pioneers’ flawless season record, now 8-0, intact.

In action vs. Holy Trinity, Maharishi School’s Minna Mohammadi won 8-5 at No. 1 singles and Sophia Medvedeva posted an 8-2 win at No. 3 singles. Dia Huggins came away with a 9-7 victory in No. 4 singles, and both Alina Knight and Jacqueline Leete won 8-0 at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Huggins and Knight won 9-8 with a 7-5 tiebreaker, while Medvedeva and Leete battled to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Mohammadi also won 8-1 vs. Albia’s Savannah Belcher, while both No. 2 Katya Sheridan and Leete grabbed 8-0 wins. Huggins won 8-6 and Knight won 8-4. Medvedeva won the closest singles match of the day with a 9-8 (12-10) victory. The Pioneer doubles teams capped the successful day with three more wins.

Maharishi School continues its undefeated season with a trip to Burlington to face the Grayhounds in the regular season finale Thursday.
