From the Fairfield Ledger -- The Maharishi School girls’ tennis team was without three varsity players Thursday but received contributions throughout the lineup to post an 8-1 win over West Burlington.
“I’m very proud of how well our girls played today,” said Pioneer coach Laurie Eyre. “Without our Nos. 1, 2 and 4 players, each girl met the challenge of playing up.”
The Pioneers posted wins in five of six singles matches. Dia Huggins won 8-2 at No. 2 singles, No. 3 Alina Knight posted an 8-1 win and Jacqueline Leete won 8-2 at No. 4 singles. Flower Shreck and Hifza Akbar also won at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
The doubles matches weren’t nearly as lopsided as singles, but the Pioneers still swept all three. The No. 1 team of Huggins and Knight, who ordinarily play at No. 3 doubles, won a close tiebreaker 9-8. Sophia Medvedeva and Leete won 8-5 at No. 2, and Shreck and Akbar grabbed an 8-6 victory.
The Pioneers (6-0) continue their homestand with a double dual vs. Albia and Holy Trinity Saturday.
