Pioneer Girls Defeat Fairfield in Regional Tennis

From the Fairfield Ledger --

Not much looked different about the Maharishi School girls’ tennis team as it made the transition from regular season to postseason play Saturday.

The Pioneer girls, owners of an undefeated record in the regular season, opened up regional play with two straight victories against Davis County and Fairfield at the Punj Tennis Center.

The Pioneers lost just one match, blanking the Mustangs before defeating the Trojans 5-1.

With the pair of wins, the Pioneers advance to the regional final next Saturday in Fort Madison. The winner of the regional final will move on to the first round of state.

In the dual vs. Fairfield, the Pioneers won at Nos. 1-5 singles. Minna Mohammadi posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory; Katya Sheridan won 6-3, 6-0; and Sophia Medvedeva was victorious 6-2, 7-5. Pearl Sawhney grabbed a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles and Dia Huggins won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot.

At No. 6 singles, Karley Williams grabbed Fairfield’s lone win of the dual with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Earlier in the day, Fairfield earned the right to face Maharishi School with a 5-1 victory over Mount Pleasant.

Winners for Fairfield in the first dual were Haylee Gilpin, Alex Higdon, Megan Palmer, Kim O’Carroll and Williams.

Gilpin, Fairfield’s No. 2, posted a 6-2, 6-4 win against Shelby Barton; No. 4 Palmer defeated Elizabeth Shaw 6-0, 6-2; and Williams won her first of two matches with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mount Pleasant’s Abby Skubal.

At No. 3 singles, Higdon edged Mount Pleasant’s Becca Lehman in three sets — 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 — and O’Carroll rallied back for a 1-6, 6-3, 10-0 victory at No. 5 singles.

The Trojans conclude the season with a 9-4 dual record and runner-up title in the Southeast Conference.
