Pioneer Boys Topple City High

From the Fairfield Ledger, April 12--

It was a different Iowa City team but the results were the same for the Pioneer boys’ tennis team, which downed City High 6-3 Thursday on the M.U.M. tennis courts.

Much like Tuesday when they earned a 6-3 victory over Iowa City West, the Pioneers won using a balanced singles game and clutch play from a pair of their doubles teams.

Sam Stickels, Raphael Gelfand, Chandre Morales and Surya Sawhney each opened the day with a victory in singles play.

Stickels cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over High’s Holden Feagler at No. 1 singles, and Gelfand defeated Drew Jaspers at No. 3. Morales, a freshman, earned a big 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 4 spot, and Sawhney came through with a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

The Pioneers’ No. 1 doubles duo of Gelfand and Morales claimed an 8-4 victory to kick off doubles play, and the No. 2 team of Sawhney and Girindra Selleck followed suit with an equally impressive 8-6 victory.

New Indian School first-year head coach Steve Briggs was pleased to see how his team handled the pressure and remained undefeated on their home courts this spring.

“We learn a lot about ourselves when we have to dig deep. Of course I’m delighted when we win 9-0 ... but I’m even happier when the boys are poised and play their best tennis when we need it most,” Briggs said. “They did that today. The wins we’ve gotten this week should help us in May.”

The Pioneer boys will look to continue their winning ways Monday when they host town rival Fairfield.
