Maharishi School Girls 1-0 With Fresh Lineup

By Carson Tigges, Ledger sports editor

Minna Mohammadi will lead a 2011 Maharishi School tennis lineup that is full of new faces.

Mohammadi is the only returning player from last year’s top six and now steps in to play No. 1 singles. Thanks to graduation, the other five members of the usual varsity lineup from a year ago are gone, including Mohammadi’s state-qualifying doubles partner Angela Sickler.

Paavani Kar and Pearl Sawhney saw some varsity action in 2010 and will be looked at to play full time this spring.

In the Pioneers’ season-opening 8-1 victory vs. West Burlington Tuesday afternoon, Sawhney paired with Sophia Medvedeva and Kar teamed up with Hifza Akbar in doubles play.

Mohammadi will hope for another appearance at the state tournament next month, and if it comes in doubles again, it may be with Tuesday’s partner, freshman Camille Goodale.

Head coach Laurie Eyre also has a history of success and sending players to the state tournament and will look for the same in 2011.

Maharishi School is scheduled to play at Fort Madison today and will see West Burlington again on the road Tuesday.
