This week the top players in southeast Iowa are training at the Punj courts at Maharishi School courts. Among the participants is Fairfield High School star Anatta Charoenkal, 2017 state high school singles champion, Yana Gaskell, #1 Iowa USTA 14 & under girls team, Lachlan Gaskell, #1 Iowa USTA 12 & under boys team, Hanna Lindblom a blossoming young Swedish player, Daniel Zhu, 2 time district champ and 3rd place 2016 state high school doubles, and Sam Avery and Katie Larson #1 boys and girls varsity players from Fort Madison as well as varsity players from Mt Pleasant and Maharishi School. “The competition is great,” said Steve Briggs, director of the camp. “Everyone is working really hard on their game. Nobody wants to lose to Lachlan, who just turned 10, but everyone knows he’s really good. The bottom line is it doesn’t matter how old you are, whether you’re a boy or girl, whoever is on the opposite side of the net is a worthy opponent.”

The campers train with various drills and get useful feedback from video replay. They run hills, do agility and quickness exercises, and will finish off the week with a camp tournament. “It’s winner take all on Friday,” said Briggs, holding up a gift certificate for a local ice cream shop.

if you want to see some great tennis, it’s happening every afternoon this week at the Maharishi School varsity courts.
