Arsanjani Leads Pioneer Boys to Tourney Title

from the Fairfield Ledger --

The Maharishi School boys’ tennis team rode senior Sam Arsanjani’s coattails to victory Saturday at its own Pioneer Invitational.

Arsanjani won 48 of 52 games played in No. 1 singles action to capture the title. The senior Pioneer’s wide wargin of victory gave Maharishi School the cushion it needed to fend off talented Davenport Assumpion.

The Pioneers, who also had the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles champions, won the team title with 168 points while Assumpion finished runner-up with 151. Maharishi JV finished third — topping two varsity squads — with 71 games won.

Raphael Gelfand, a junior, was the No. 2 singles champion with 39 points, while senior Thomas Weiss and freshman Sam Stickels were champions at No. 1 doubles.

The No. 1 tandem, in only their second week playing together, scored 43 points and posted an impressive win over last year’s Class 1A doubles fourth-place team, Assumption’s Kyle Gacke and Eric Lammers 8-5.

At No. 2 doubles, Solaris Nite and Surya Sawhney finished runner-up and four points out of first place with 38.

MSAE JV scored 18 points in No. 1 singles and 14 in No. 2 singles, as well as 20 points in No. 1 doubles and 19 in No. 2 doubles.David Fleshman won two of four matches, as did sophomore Avery Mullenneaux. Junior Daniel Pirc and sophomore Girindra Selleck earned two match victories at No. 1 doubles.
