Pioneers Win Ottumwa Invitational!

Maharishi School boys' tennis team wins again! Maharishi School is a private day and boarding college preparatory school in Fairfield, Iowa. We are an ideal boarding school location for families in the Quad Cities and the Midwest, but also have students from around the world!“By far the closest meet I’ve been involved with,” said Pioneer coach, Steve Briggs, . “We could have lost any number of ways, but the boys played for each other and came out on top.”

On a pristine Saturday at Ottumwa park, the Pioneers faced Ottumwa, Knoxville, and Oskaloosa. After the completion of the morning singles competition, Knoxville held a slim 20 to 19 lead over the Pioneers. In singles, the Pioneers dominated the top of the lineup, winning positions 1-2-3 while Knoxville did the same at the bottom, winning positions 4-5-6.

As is often the case, the tournament came down to doubles, and several matches won by the Pioneers could have gone to Knoxville. At #1 doubles, juniors Daniel Zhu and Devan Burke survived two match points against Knoxville before prevailing in a tiebreaker. At #2 doubles, Kai Vessey and Kevin Fan also fought back from a deficit to defeat Knoxville. Both Pioneer teams earned first place medals which resulted in Maharishi School’s team victory.

Playing error free tennis, Kai Vessey dominated his singles opponents by winning 30 out of a possible 30 games. Devan Burke also dominated by winning 27 out a possible 30 games.

The entire team — Kai Vessey, Daniel Zhu, Devan Burke, Kevin Fan, David Zhang, and Frank Wang  earned "Pioneer Player of the Match” since every player won key matches in the tournament.
